Exploring the Present: Your Winter Sanctuary in Irati

By late January, the noise of New Year’s resolutions has faded, but the fatigue often remains. In the heart of the Navarre Pyrenees, the world feels different. Here, the silence isn’t empty—it is full of peace.

This Meditation & Yoga Sanctuary is a curated space for those suffering from burnout and sensory overload. It is an invitation to put down your agenda and inhabit the present moment within the protective walls of our 13th-century Palace.

Why this Sanctuary is different

Guided by a Psychologist from Saint Louis University (Missouri) with 40 years of Sadhana, this retreat bridges the gap between mental health science and spiritual depth.

  • The Cocoon of History: Stay at Casa Marterena, a medieval palace rebuilt stone by stone. The thick walls and the roaring fireplace provide a physical sense of safety that allows your nervous system to truly reset.
  • The Medicine of Silence: Mindful walks through the Irati Forest. In winter, the beech trees stand in quiet majesty. Breathing this air is the fastest way to clear mental fog and restore vitality.
  • Deep Restorative Practice: Beyond Hatha Yoga, we practice Yoga Nidra and sound healing (Gong/Drum) to access the deep layers of the subconscious where stress is held.
  • Seasonal Nourishment: Warm, organic, and Ayurvedic-inspired vegetarian meals designed to support digestion and comfort the body during the winter chill.

The setting: nature and silence in the Navarre Pyrenees

We host the retreat in Arrieta, a small mountain village where time slows down. Accommodation is in a 13th-century noble house carefully rebuilt stone by stone to preserve its medieval essence.

Surrounding it are the ancient beechwoods of Irati Forest, one of Europe’s most spectacular woodlands. In January, winter’s quiet offers the perfect atmosphere for introspection and conscious practice.

Benefits of this retreat

In just three days you’ll notice changes that last well beyond the weekend:

  • Deep self-connection through guided meditation and mindful yoga
  • Stress reduction via breathwork (pranayama) and deep relaxation
  • Energy recharge through mindful hikes and forest bathing
  • Greater inner clarity to face the year with purpose
  • Physical and emotional wellbeing with yoga for all levels
